I’m thrilled to announce that, earlier this week, I started my new role at Netflix as Head of Communications – Southeast Asia, based out of Singapore.
In this role, I will report to the Vice President of Communications – Asia, and be part of a team to help to formulate, execute and sustain a global communications strategy for Netflix in the Asia region. I will also focus specifically on corporate and policy communications issues.
It’s really quite exciting, though somewhat surreal, to be working at Netflix. I mean, I still remember Netflix back in college (showing my age here!) when it was still mailing DVDs! Since then, I’ve watched how it’s pivoted – successfully – to become a leader in technology and entertainment today!
The Culture Memo lit a fire in my belly – it felt like I was screaming “YES” to a lot of things, like: “People Over Process,” “Working In A Dream Team,” and “Freedom & Responsibility.” It also crystalized my thoughts and gave me the language to appreciate how lucky I have been to have great leaders, managers and mentors throughout my career who have embodied these principles, which resonate so meaningfully with me.
It’s a privilege to now have this opportunity to play my part in making Netflix more of a hit here in Asia!
Earlier this week, The Straits Times – Singapore’s most widely read newspaper – featured Mr. Kamas across print, digital and video.
In a very inspiring video (I really encourage you to watch it and add to the +52k views garnered since it was published 2 days ago!), Mr. Kamas shares his life story and how he delivers with UberEATS. He spoke about how grateful he felt being able to find a way earn his own income and care for his cancer-stricken elder sister through UberEATS, saying, (Translated) “They let me work, so I’m happy. I’m more encouraged to work. Since they let me work, I feel compelled to repay them by working hard. As long as I can work, I will work.”
Besides the video, The Straits Times also shared more in a written feature story. The story appeared online as well as in print – earning a front cover mention, as well as taking up 2/3 of a page in its “Top Of The News” section.
Once again, Mr. Kamas was effusive of his experience with UberEATS, saying, “I liked my previous job, but the salary was not enough to pay rental and buy food. Now, with this job, it is easier. I can follow my own time and target, and earn more.”
He also shared that seeing his photo being shared on Facebook made him happy: “Maybe then, more people like me will realise they can also do such jobs.”
Now, one year later, I begin the next leg of my trip with Uber!
Following a search that included internal and external candidates, I’m superpumped to begin my new role as Head of Communications for Southeast Asia. In this role, I will be responsible for the Communications teams based out of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.
I am thrilled to grow my career in one of the most exciting companies on the planet! Even with everything that has recently happened – the truth is, we’ve only just begun. As a company, we are making definitive progress as we continue to focus on profitability. In Southeast Asia, there is so much more potential to realise even when you consider our transport and UberEATS businesses alone!
We will focus on growing Uber as a sustainable business in the region: serving riders and consumers; driver-, delivery-, and restaurant-partners; as well as other key stakeholders – by helping Southeast Asia’s cities unlock growth and mobility with Uber’s smart innovation.
Are we there yet? Do we have everything figured out?
Like I said, we’ve only just begun.
Some of the most enduring and respected companies of our time have gone through their own version of a ‘redemption journey’ – and it is a privilege to play a role in this chapter of Uber’s story.
Several months ago, I received an unexpected phone call. It was from recruiter inviting me to consider a role at Uber. While I wasn’t looking for new opportunities at the time, I was certainly intrigued. Three weeks later, I was told that Uber had made their choice: I was their new Head of Communications for Singapore and Malaysia.
It came somewhat surprisingly (and also ironically – I wasn’t exactly thrilled at their rebranding; so maybe this is an opportunity to “be the change you want to see”). Nonetheless, it is definitely a very compelling opportunity! I am thrilled to work with one of the most influential brands in the world today. Uber is literally changing the way we live. Since its inception in 2009, just 7 years ago, the company has changed the way people move*; it has hyper-connected locations; and it is revolutionizing business strategy (I mean, how many times have we wondered about which business would be “Uber-ed” next? “Uber-ed” is now part of the business lexicon!).
In this role, I will lead communications for both Singapore and Malaysia – focusing on brand building and storytelling for Uber to media and third parties. This means looking for compelling ways to show and tell how Uber is transforming the way people get around; giving folks an option for independent, flexible work; as well as cutting urban congestion by getting more butts into fewer cars. I’ll be driving campaigns and making a positive case for reform through creative and strategic storytelling across multiple platforms – traditional and digital, earned and owned.
On a personal front, this has also necessitated a move for my family and I to Singapore. So, bear with me if I’m a little uncommunicative during this transition period. Obviously, this is going to be more than a “just go to the new office on Monday morning for work”.
